I majored in "pure" mathematics as an undergraduate, but think I might have extracted more enjoyment and learning from my studies if I had pursued an applied mathematics degree. My suggestion for another essay in this series (maybe it isn't a series yet, but maybe it should be?) by you knowledgeable people: pure vs. applied -- considerations in making the choice.
